Timber Garden Furniture: Storing for Winter

As the days shorten and temperatures fall, it’s time to think about protecting your timber garden furniture for the winter months. Quality wooden furniture can last for decades, but only if it’s properly maintained and stored during harsh weather. Taking a few preventive steps now ensures that you’ll enjoy beautifully preserved pieces when spring returns.

Begin by cleaning all furniture thoroughly to remove dirt, bird droppings, and mildew. Use mild soapy water and a soft brush to lift debris, then let the wood dry completely. Once clean, apply a suitable oil, wax, or sealant depending on the timber type. Teak, oak, and acacia benefit from natural oils that keep them nourished, while treated pine may require resealing to maintain weather resistance.

If you have space, move your furniture into a shed, garage, or covered veranda to protect it from moisture and frost. For items that must stay outside, use waterproof yet breathable covers to prevent mould and condensation. Avoid plastic sheets that trap moisture against the wood. Raise table legs slightly off the ground to stop damp creeping in from below.

Winter care is about preservation, not perfection. Over time, timber develops a graceful patina that adds character. Regular maintenance keeps it strong, safe, and beautiful. Come spring, your garden will feel instantly welcoming again, with furniture ready for sunny breakfasts and evening gatherings under the open sky.
